The narrator’s relationship with Yuki changes throughout the book. What were the times it changes? What actions of each character led to a change? What was happening in the story during that change? How did that change affect the story?

Finding meaning in a disconnected world. The narrator in this book goes through life feeling detached. He has shallow relationships, friends disappear, and even reality can feel unstable at times. To “dance” is a metaphor for continuing to move forward despite confusion, loneliness, and a lack of clear purpose.

The narrator builds his life around self-isolation and unfulfillment. It drives the way he spends most of his days, influencing the relationship he has with others as well as his career. He intentionally goes through life on his own and without adding any meaning to anything he involves himself in.

Influences of multiple realities in the novel and Murakami’s writing. Where are there noticeable changes in reality in the novel? Are the other realities creations of the characters’ minds as a way to cope or find something? Does Murakami feel like he is in another reality when he writes? Does he purposefully write stories with multiple realities?

Loneliness, identity, and the search for meaning.
We find characters in the book, especially the narrator, navigate through isolation, surreal experiences, and emotional detachment, all while trying to find purpose in a strange, almost dreamlike reality.
