Netiquette is a combined form for Internet Etiquette, referring to conventions that support safety, efficiency and courtesy in electronic communications. I have listed some basic considerations below. For a more thorough approach, please consult Yale University’s Netiquette guidelines.
- Keep your username and password private.
- Do not open or forward email messages or attachments from sources you do not recognize. Delete them immediately.
- Before you forward a message from someone else, make sure you have that person’s permission to do so.
- Be considerate and respectful.
- Include a concise and accurate subject for each email or discussion board submission.
- Compose your messages thoughtfully. If you are responding to someone else’s request, make sure you understand all that is requested and attempt to respond completely. If you are making a request of someone else, be thorough, specific and clear.
- Use appropriate language conventions for your messages. Avoid abbreviations or acronyms that may not be clearly understood by your readers. This is a college writing class. Take care to construct thoughtful sentences and paragraphs. Make a reasonable effort to follow formal grammar usage and punctuation conventions.
- Keep your messages cordial and personal, but try to stay focused on your primary message.
