Whether you come from somewhere the daily low temperature rarely gets below freezing or somewhere subzero temperatures happen every winter, it’s hard to associate January weather in Kent, OH as “springlike.” Please describe either (a) something interesting that you did during your semester break or (b) something you are anticipating (with either dread or pleasure) for the weeks ahead.

I was not ready to come back to school yet, so I’m anticipating going on break again! Or just a long weekend with no homework. Last semester was very stressful, so I want a period of time where I feel like I can relax.

Over winter break, I, along with around 50 other members of Kent State’s Ski Club, traveled to Banff, Canada. Out of my 5 days there, I skied 3 of them, and it was absolutely amazing. The views from the mountain felt almost unreal, with how stunning the natural landscapes were. The skiing was much more difficult than I was used to, but the town of Banff and the views made it all worth it.

Over break, I went to Seven Springs with my friends. We went up for New Year’s, and it was so much fun!! My friend has a condo there, and it was so nice to see everyone and catch up. All of my friends go to separate colleges, so being able to gather everyone in one place was special. Although one of my friends was the only one who skis, she didn’t mind staying in when all of us were there. We played many games and laughed so much!

I spent time with my friends and family over break, but I ready to get back into a schedule. I am excited for it to get warm again even though there’s still a while before that. I definitely took the warm for granted last semester.

I am anticipating (with dread) being very unhappy for the next few weeks because it is so cold outside. I would rather be somewhere warm right now, like Hawaii. I do not like the cold. And while I was home for break, it was so nice out that I was able to drive with my windows down on some days, so coming back to this horrible weather is not fun.

Over winter break I got to appreciate the time with my family (and friends) more then ever. I never realized how much I missed watching TV with my dad, or chatting with my mom, or annoying my brothers. I even got to learn some swing dancing with my good friend. There are just so many people that I am grateful I have had the chance to meet and get to know.

Over winter break, I spent a lot of time visiting my friends who were also home from other universities. It was so refreshing to get a chance to reconnect and debrief on the events from the fall semester. I also spent a lot of time with my parents, which was really nice. Our schedules often do not line up, so seeing my family can be difficult at times. Overall,l I’m really grateful for the connections I have and the memories I made.

I had a great winter break. I tried to spend as much time as I could with my friends and family. My friends and I booked a beautiful Airbnb in Sugarcreek for New Year’s, which was a lot of fun! It felt great to get some time off to compose myself and relax. Like most, I’m dreading this semester, but I’m hoping it won’t be as bad as last now that I’m more accustomed to college life.

Over Winter break I traveled to Italy with my two sisters and visited Lake Como and Florence. Although I was very sad to leave them because they stayed there for work and school, I was ready to get back to Kent to see my friends! I am really looking forward to the spring semester and cant wait for it to start getting warmer outside!

During the beginning of break I went to Columbus to meet voice actors. There were so many venders I ended up spending a little over $300 dollars, so rip my bank account. Other than that I spent most of my break with friends and my boyfriend.

During break I was able to see some of my friends and family I haven’t seen in a bit of time which was nice and refreshing. I also unfortunately got the flu and was sick for a couple of days but it was ok because I was at home. I also got to spend time with my girlfriend which was amazing and went to work quite a bit. I am excited this semester because I am looking forward to keeping myself on a better track this semester than I did last semester. I am also kind of dreading my new classes kind of because they are definitely harder than my last semester.

Over break, I did not spend my time doing anything necessarily extraordinary. I did, however, make sure to take full advantage of the time I had with no class or outside work. It gave me the opportunity to pick up some extra shifts at work in attempt to rack up some savings without having the stress of homework waiting for me when I get off my shift. I also spent more time with my friends over break than I have in a while. Unless I had some other family commitments surrounding holidays, I tried to reach out and spend time with some of my friends nearly every day. It was really nice to be able to get schedules to align for more than an hour with each other, having extracurriculars and class being out of the schedule.

I spent most of my break reconnecting with friends I haven’t seen in a little while. I went to a band concert at my high school, took a few dance classes at my old studio, and found time to hang out with as many of my friends as possible before we all left for school again. Going back to my high school life for a bit really made me realize just how much has changed since college started, so that was really interesting to see! My friends and I decided that we want to keep in touch with and see each other more this semester, so I’m really looking forward to that!

The most interesting thing that happened after our class let out last semester actually happened before break for me. On December 6th, I competed in my third powerlifting meet in Columbus and became a state champion by winning first place in my weight class. I totaled 1284 LBS and hit several personal records during this meet. I had so much fun competing along side of some of my closest friends. Over Christmas break I spent a lot of time relaxing and having fun with my relatives and friends from back home.

Over break, I was able to officially start my job! A director I have worked with before asked me to choreograph the high school musical she is directing, The Addams Family. I took a lot of time over break to start choreographing the dances for the show, and I even got to start running some rehearsals. I’m super excited to continue working on this show because this job relates so much to what I want to do in the future, and it’s a good way to build my resume! Although I’m excited to teach new people, I am not looking forward to driving home every weekend for rehearsals.

During the break, I got to spend New Years with some new and old friends at a small get-together. It was the most fun I had over the break, and I am grateful to have entered the year with such good company! We ended up discussing our college lives together and how we’ve changed after high school, which was pretty interesting to hear.

Over winter break, my dad’s family came over from Philly and we spent New Years together. We ended up going to downtown Pittsburgh and immersing ourselves in the Christmas Light Show at Phipps Conservatory, which we do every year, and that was really fun! We went to my aunt’s house after, and that was a really special time.

During break it was mostly just visiting family, although we did venture to the Mansfield Reformatory for my brother’s birthday. The old reformatory is known for serving as the set for the movie Shawshank Redemption, while also being considered haunted. This was something I have never seen before and the true scale of the cells was crazy. Other than this, we did a few escape rooms and saw Christmas lights. I am looking forward to this semester to have fun with my friends here at Kent.
