A cold return to campus

Dale Richards 2015

Whether you come from somewhere the daily low temperature rarely gets below freezing or somewhere subzero temperatures happen every winter, this was an unusually cold beginning to “Spring” semester 2025. Please describe either (a) something interesting that you did during your semester break or (b) something you are anticipating (with either dread or pleasure) for the weeks ahead.

A goal I have for the upcoming semester is improving my work ethic. Last semester I was very stressed and often behind because of my procrastination, but since I have more of an idea what to expect for this semester, I feel like I’ll be able to stay on top of things more. So, I’m excited to hopefully be less stressed, not falling behind, and not being a procrastinator.

My break was very beneficial. I improved my time-management skills, worked on overcoming procrastination, reduced my stress levels, and now feel much more confident for the spring semester. I’m expecting better results. During my break, I also visited Wooster, where a good friend of mine is studying at Wooster College. I had a great time with him, spent two nights there, and we went to Cleveland to visit the Museum of Art.

My winter break was very good in the beginning, and then became very bad. I had a great time in Virginia visiting my family for the holidays, and my boyfriend surprised me with tickets to the Steelers and Chiefs games for Christmas! I also was able to do a Christmas gift exchange with some of my friends from high school who graduated with me! I was thrilled to see them again after being away from them for so long at different colleges! It was a good start to the break and very nice! Right before I came back to Kent though, we had to put my childhood dog down because she had cancer. It was so heartbreaking but since I was home from college, I got to spend the whole day with her before we took her to the vet. I was very thankful to have that one-on-one time with her before she passed since I missed so much time with her while at college this past semester. Overall, my break was both fun and sad.

My break was pretty enjoyable. It was nice be have time at home. During break I got to see all of my friends from high school. We all went to different colleges, so we had a night where we all hung out and just talked about the last semester and how things were going. It was great to be able to spend a lot of time together because none of us will be home at the same time until summer.

Over break I went on my first cruise! I went with my family over the week of Christmas. We went to one of the cruise lines private islands where I was able to swim with pigs and stingrays, this was my favorite part of the trip. The second day was just a sailing day but it was super rocky and everyone in my family got sea sick except me and my dad. Me and him went. to see a play that night and it was super cool. On Christmas day we were in St. Thomas it was so beautiful and so warm. We visited Blackbeard’s castle and then spent the rest of the day on the beach. The next day we were in St. Marteen. There we went on a boat tour around the island, I found out that I do not like snorkeling, but I did see a sea turtle which was super cool. The last two days were just sailing back to port and I did lots of stuff on the ship, like waterslides, zip lines, and some gambling! My second favorite thing on the trip had to be the food. It was so amazing and so fresh. It was a nice break from all the cold in Ohio and it was nice family bonding time.

I did not do much over the break, however the break did make me realize how bad I am at managing my time and having motivation. Most days of break, I knew I had to do things, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do them. I decided that I would be beneficial for me to start being more productive with my time instead of scrolling on social media all day so I decided to pick up reading again. I really like reading, but it has been hard for me in the past to do it consistently. I am excited for this semester because I really think de-stressing with books instead of social media will be really great for my motivation and time management.

One thing that I am dreading this semester is my courses since I am taking more than last semester and have started taking nursing classes. I’m hoping that I will be able to stay organized and ahead of my work as the semester continues. I tend to stress out about schoolwork a lot so I hope by having all my assignments organized I can limit that stress as much as possible. Something that I’m excited about anticipating is spending more time with my friends on campus. I’m excited to see what memories we make this semester since we had a great time last semester.

For the upcoming weeks I am not looking forward to constantly being busy with schoolwork. It was nice not having to stress about turning in assignments on time over break. The first few weeks of the semester seem the most stressful to me, trying to get a good idea of how each of my new classes operate. The rest of the semester usually goes pretty smoothly.

My winter break was very enjoyable. I went to Florida for the first time and had so much fun. It was refreshing to leave the cold weather for a little bit. When I returned to Ohio, I got to celebrate both of my parents birthdays and Christmas! I have always been a big family person, so it was really nice being with the whole family on the holiday. Later, I went to Pittsburgh where my boyfriend is from for New Years and we went down town to watch the ball rise in the city. I have never experienced something like that before, but I had so much fun! I was also able to catch up with some friends back home which is always enjoyable. Although I cannot say that I’m entirely pleased to be back on campus, I did miss my friends here and I look forward to everything this semester has to offer.

Over break my friends and I played a game called true crime stories. My sister had gotten it in the summer and had never played it. The game consists of pieces of evidence from real crime stories that you have to use to solve the mystery. There are emails and phone numbers listed that you actually contact to get more information. I didn’t know how much we would like it, but we ended up staying at someone’s house until two in the morning solving it. The next day we came right back to finish it. It probably took longer than needed because all of our attention’s spans are low, but it was really fun, and I think we all enjoyed it. It is very satisfying solving the different cases after hours of contemplating if we knew what we were doing.

My break was honestly kind of boring but it was really nice to be home and see my friends. The first week I stayed at my friend Bella’s house because my grandma went on a cruise and we just went to Chipotle and I would take her to school and pick her up after. Christmas was really good for me I got pretty much everything I wanted and I got to see my whole family. On New Years day my grandma and I drove to Washington, DC where she is going to be living for her new job. My boyfriend met us out there to take me back to his house in Delaware that night. My grandma took us to eat at this Mexican place which was really good. I spent a week at my boyfriend’s house and they actually got more snow than we did and I got their family car stuck in the middle of their street because the snow was so bad. When I came home I had to work at the Gun Show thing I always go to and then I came back to school. It was a busy break but also super boring in my opinion.

I didn’t really have that exciting of a break but I think the time off of school did help because I definitely needed the time to just chill for a little bit. Christmas was pretty good except for the fact that most of my family extended family got sick so we were not able to be together. I did get to see my sister and my nephew over Christmas break a lot which is nice since im not able to see them much when I’m in school. I was glad I got to spend new years with my family and friends the o hadn’t seen in a little bit which was really nice. Overall, I think its gonna be nice to come back and get into a routine of going to classes after having a really long break.

My break was so calming and refreshing. I love the feeling of being home and being with my family and the house all decorated really made being home so special. I went to Bonita Springs over break and it was a really nice change of scenery but the flight down and back were horrible. The weather cause us to be delayed multiple times and we did not get back into Ohio till about 1am. Other than that though the vacation was relaxing and enjoyable! Aside from my vacation being home for break and spending it with my friends and family really put me in a good headspace and I am hoping to finish this year off on a good note.

My break was pretty boring but it was a nice break from school. I worked a lot which was nice because I did not work during the fall semester, so it was nice to finally make some money again. I also had a good time visiting with family for Christmas, and one of my cousins came back to Ohio from Texas for a few days so it was fun seeing her again. I went out with some friends for New Years which was also fun, and it was nice to see all of my friends who were home from college since it is hard to visit them during the school year. Overall it was a very slow and boring break but it was still nice to have a break from school.

One thing interesting that happened over break was that I ended up helping someone at the rec center. I was in the rec center sauna after I worked out thinking about where I want to be in ten years and if I’m on the right track. As I was contemplating, a girl walked out of the sauna and walked back in and said, “I just passed out and I need help.” I helped her sit down and offered to fill up her water. After that, I asked her some basic questions on what she ate that day how much water she drank, what workout she did and if she had started any new medication. It turned out she drank very little water, only “ate” a smoothie, and had started a new acne medicine that “began with an S.” Thankfully I knew the exact medicine she was on because I’m on the same medication myself for acne. I asked her if it was spironolactone and she said yes. I talked to her and told her that medicine can dehydrate you easily and make you dizzy and even pass out especially with little water and food intake because it has happened to me multiple times. She was very thankful for my help and I ended up walking her to her car and giving her a snack I had in my bag. I truly enjoyed helping her and was sure in that moment I was in the right career

Something interesting that I did over break was that I went to see the new movie Wicked with my whole family. My cousins had mentioned the idea on Christmas Day and we all loved it. My uncle is an actor so he used to live in LA but a few years ago he moved to Ireland with my aunt. I actually was just there over the summer to visit them! This year, they came back to Ohio to spend time with us for Christmas. There were 12 of us in total and I thought it was so funny how we walked into the movie theater in a big group. Although the movie was a little long for my attention span, I loved it. Being able to spend time with my entire family really meant a lot to me because it’s very often that we are all together.

My favorite thing about the break was that I had a lot of gigs for my band over the break. I also got to jam out with friends, and quite literally with my family. Although I am dreading the cold and snow, especially walking from CCF to Satterfield or Bowman, during days that feel like an Ice Age, March is always a great time of year for me!
